Spironolactone is primarily used as a diuretic to increase urine production and promote the excretion of excess fluid from the body. It works by blocking the action of aldosterone, a hormone that regulates fluid and electrolyte balance in the body. By inhibiting aldosterone, spironolactone helps to reduce the reabsorption of sodium and water, while retaining potassium.
