Pravastatin works by inhibiting an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase, which plays a key role in cholesterol synthesis in the liver. By blocking this enzyme, pravastatin helps reduce the production of cholesterol and increases the liver's ability to remove LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream. This can lead to a decrease in total cholesterol levels, LDL cholesterol (commonly referred to as "bad" cholesterol), and triglycerides.
